November 03, 2000: a death in the family
The news ripples.

I hear a day late, because though I used to read her on a regular basis, she mostly stopped journalling a year ago. I stopped by every few months,to see if she'd done anything new.

She wasn't a friend. She wasn't even an aquaintence. I think I may have exchanged email with her once upon a time. But I admired her work from afar--her richly textured graphics, her writing that always seemed more entertaining than my own.

If there is an "us", a group of people who expose our lives out here on the Web, she was definitely a part of us. A part of the family.

And I read this and I bowed my head for a moment.

She's gone.

My sympathy and empathy goes out to those who knew her far better than I, those who loved her.

Halloween was amusing. I went out trick or treating with Der Sprout, Velvet, and Lumiere. It had been a really long time since I'd been out, and I really enjoyed myself. The litany was:
"Trickertreet!"
*candy given*
"What do you say?"
"Thank you, bye bye!"

We were up on the upper western slope of Queen Anne Hill--where all the huge houses are. There were *mobs* of kids of all sizes, running around like crazed things. The littler kids were ambling along, but the older kids were clearly out for one thing--to get as much candy as humanly possible before the night was over. They were on the move. It was great to watch the packs as they swirled down the street.

The air smelled like fall, but it wasn't cold. We walked along and I marveled at the size of the houses, the way people decorated. One house in particular had a wrought-iron fence with spikes around their property--which they'd impaled plastic severed hands on, much to the delight of the passers-by.

And then we went and had dinner, and I went and picked up Chris, and I finally got to collapse into bed. Life's good.

The weekend was fun, if a bit chilly. It rained much of the weekend; I never got completely dry. But I fed the sheep and ran around with the kids and sang silly songs until I just couldn't stand it any more. I played the cyclops game with Das Sprout to hear heart's content. But I have *never* been so happy to see toilets, hot showers, and warm, soft beds. Wow.

Monday was all about marveling about how lucky I am to live in civilization. Heh.

(My mom told me on the phone that I once went 24 hours without peeing because I refused to pee in the great out of doors. I'm not all that far removed from that six-year-old. Even if I *did* finally learn the tricks of the girlpee in the woods.)
